Biological Children of "Sperm Donor" Thomas Lippert

We believe that it is possible that Thomas Lippert has many biological children living in the Salt Lake City area, Minnesota and beyond. The parents of these children may be completely unaware that their child is not biologically related to the presumed father. If you or someone you know was conceived through artificial insemination at the fertility clinic associated with the University of Utah, otherwise known as Reproductive Medical Technologies, you need to be aware of this potential. We encourage you to have your children tested at one of three companies offering genealogy DNA tests where the biological relatives of Thomas Lippert have tested for comparison purposes. These are 23andMe, AncestryDNA and Family Tree DNA. This is not a legal paternity test and is for informational purposes only.

Although some may feel that it is preferable not to know if Mr. Lippert is the biological father of your child, we believe the knowledge of biological heritage is essential to avoid half-siblings who may be living in the same communities potentially engaging in romantic relationships, as well as for family medical history.

Thomas Lippert worked at the fertility clinic from 1986-1997 or 1998, but began donations in 1983. It is possible that his sperm sample was exchanged with other intended fathers' samples and/or was frozen under other names and used after this time.

For more information, details can be found here or please contact lippertschildren@hotmail.com .

Thomas Lippert as a young man

Tom Lippert as he looked while working at the clinic

**Update 2/25/14: We have now confirmed that Thomas Lippert was a popular "approved" sperm donor, Donor #044, with donations beginning in 1983. In addition to being used hundreds of times in Salt Lake City, his sperm was regularly shipped to Dr. Urry's Minnesota fertility clinic and, on occasion, to other states. This greatly increases the likelihood of two or more of the hundreds of young adults who were fathered by Tom meeting and developing  a relationship.

He was described in a 1991 donor profile as an attorney with 24 years of schooling. Blond with blue eyes, 5'11 and 190 lbs, O negative blood type with German heritage. Hobbies include: traveling, sports, music and videography. In 1983 he was described similarly, but instead of an attorney, he was listed as a TA (teacher's assistant) and grad student with more than ten years of education. Interests include: stamp collecting, medicine and sports.

Dr. Urry's former office manager who was familiar with the success of Tom's donations confirmed that Tom could easily have hundreds of children, including many at Dr. Urry's Minnesota clinic, and the University of Utah's own spokesperson admitted that thousands of families could be affected.

If any families discover that they are indeed affected by Tom's actions and wish to bring legal action against the university, please be advised that legal action must be commenced within one year of discovery.

**Update 4/12/18 - The photo of the unidentified boy has been identified and removed.

  1. I think that 23andMe has been asked to halt conducting consumer DNA testing, but there are multiple paths that one can take to get DNA insights and I wish everyone involved with this sad story the best. You are no less an amazing person than you were before, just a different story line unfolds now.

  2. Tom Lippert was our next door neighbor from 1993 until his death. It was well known that he had a heavy alcohol dependency and suffered from paranoid delusions. He also exhibited violent behavior and had a felony for which he spent time in prison. Our family suffered financial and emotional hardship due to a vicious campaign of intimidation and surreptitious property damage that he perpetuated against us. All this, due to a very unstable personality. I would strongly urge anyone that may have been a victim of this unspeakable act of violation to have their children tested. They may be in more peril than you realize. There could be serious mental health concerns for his offspring.

    1. That being said, it is imperative that the recipients of this clinic find out if they have been a victim of Tom Lippert, especially if (God forbid) any of these children is exhibiting any of these behaviours that you described or has a genetic disorder that is linked to him.

    4. I have two children conceived with sperm from the andrology department at the U during this time period. I am sick at heart because I think they might have this monster for a biological father. My daughter spent a year, as a 14 year old, at a residential treatment center for mental health issues and my son has an extra Y chromosome and has had mental problems as well. The kicker is that the picture of the young Lippert is the spitting image of my son, down to the misaligned teeth. I am so upset

    6. I feel deep sympathy for the potential victims, this was the reason for my original post above. I have chosen to remove my anonymity for the same reason. If you are concerned about your own family and would like to learn more about what it was like being Lippert's next door neighbor, I would be willing to share my experience with you. I believe that once we have talked you will understand what motivated Tom Lippert to violate people in this most despicable way. My hope is that you may be able to gain some insight and perspective to possibly help those children that may be suffering.

    9. Are you sure hes actually dead? My exes step dad Keith Williamson is a spitting image right down to the facial hair eyes and all hes about the age Tom would be and his past is very sketchy recently it was discovered his records are fake. He hates kids, hes quite abusive to everyone even his wife hes controlling egotistical and smart. He claims hes from england but his accent is quite off. The picture of Tom and Keith are identical every little detail its quite disturbing. I just seen the 20/20 special and i asked myself why Keith is on there i swear its him

    11. I am a first cousin of Thomas Lippert. I spoke to him shortly before he passed away from liver failure in July 1999. He had asked me to come to see him before he died, and I did try to get there, but I could not get there before he died. He wanted to be buried in his tuxedo - which he was. My aunt and uncle both viewed the body, and it was very hard on them to see their only son in the coffin. The burial was at our local cemetery, and I attended that. He is definitely deceased since 1999. If there were any possibility that he were alive, he would have been egotistical enough to have contacted me. I KNOW that he is dead and buried since July 1999. I don't know who your ex's stepfather is, but it is definitely NOT Tom Lippert. I feel sad for what Tom has done to so many families. He had a very high IQ, and he could have used his intelligence to help humanity rather than damage it. Tom began donating his sperm in MN through Abbott Northwestern Hospital fertility clinic, run by the younger Dr. Urry. He had just gotten out of prison for kidnapping a young woman and holding her for several months. She was too afraid to leave through intimidation. Tom was arrogant and selfish, and since he could have no children of his own, he chose to be a sperm donor - first legitimately and later, on his own terms. I believe the younger Dr. Urry was aware of his prison/felony record and yet still used him for a sperm donor in MN and also encouraged him to come to Salt Lake City to become a doctor. I do know that one child was fathered because a friend/co-worker wanted to have a child before she missed out on childbearing age. The photo of the baby is of that child. I believe that gave him the idea to "choose" women to father children with. Since these women would have had nothing to do with him in reality, HE chose which women he would father children with, unbeknownst to the women. He always loved beautiful women. It was a power trip, I believe, and it gave him the children that he could never have legally or rightfully. I also believe it is a crime that the University of Utah has not stepped forward and accepted responsibility for hiring such a person, and now allowing a cover-up. To have the University be the people investigating this travesty is like having the wolf guard the hen house. It is wrong. This should have been done by a totally neutral party, and also testing done by a neutral party - NOT by the University, which so far, I would not trust further than I could throw. I pray daily for all of the families involved in this horrible travesty - and I do know that God does use good for bad. Please rest easy - Thomas Lippert IS dead. He can no longer do any more harm.

    12. My oldest daughter just had her DNA done and that’s where she discovered that she was this idiots daughter. Now I’ll be honest I picked number 044 for my donor, but what upsets me vastly is his background. Not in a million years would I have ever picked a person to father my children with a record like this. You mention that your cousin had a thing for pretty women, and that definitely takes me back to what Dr Urry said to me and his nurse Linda said, although I picked number 044 for my donor I definitely feel o was targeted and pushed to choose that number. I’m so sickened by the University of Utah and there actions at not doing their job to ensure that every patient was protected, now my kids all have to live with the fact that the biological person that donated was a felon, an alcoholic amongst other things. U of U you owe so many apologies!!!!

Yeah it won't change anything now and probably won't change how they love their parents or how their parents love them (at least, I'd hope not).

If I was potentially in that situation, I'd like to know if I had any brothers or sisters out there. Even if they didn't particularly care to know me (I have biological family that doesn't particularly care to know me now). They'd still be family.

Don't so quick to tell people how to react to such a situation. Just because you'd react a certain way doesn't mean they will do the same.

    1. No, they are not. 23andMe and Family Tree DNA are not associated with Ancestry.com. I specifically have recommended all three companies to give people choices. These tests may not be legally admissible in a court of law, but they are actually more comprehensive in that they test between ~700,000 markers, while traditional paternity tests only look at about 15 markers. Anyway, Thomas Lippert is not alive to participate in a paternity test and these tests reliably detect and predict relationships out to 2nd cousins, so they can be utilized to compare to his family's DNA instead of his own.
      Thank you.

    2. 3:19 about the best damn words of wisdom of this entire blog! My bio father was a serial murderer whom by the way did not raise me. My husband and I decided that it wasn't necessary to disclose this miniscule "fact" to our children, it mattered not.

All 4 of our children have achieved successes in their lives both professionally and personally beyond our imaginations. I would suspect one or more could have been emotionally damaged by this irrelevant skeleton in the closet if they were informed. They have a phenomenal loving relationship with my REAL father who adopted me at a young age.

I find the excuse of "to spare them of sibling relationships" ridiculous and laughable. Certainly it has happened on exceedingly rare occasions but in my opinion the author of this blog is using it as a tactical move to instill fear in order to achieve her own agenda.

I wish everyone peace in their choice and please know from experience some things are truly best left alone.

  15. Thomas Lippert was no 'father'. I'll say that right up front. What he WAS, was a mentally disturbed sperm donor who very likely committed multiple acts of biological rape against unwilling (and unwitting) victims. The REAL fathers are the men who gladly and happily raised their children in partnership with the mothers who brought those babies into the world. Now some have suggested that due to Lippert's psychological issues, that perhaps his biological offspring could also exhibit such behaviors. I personally think that is absolute hogwash. Children are not molded so much by the one sperm cell that fertilizes an egg in their mother's womb, as they are molded by the (hopefully) combined love and care of their parents, taught (at the least) to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (i.e., the Golden Rule) and they grow up as a reflection of the parents who raised them, and God willing, a positive reflection. This is in some ways like the old parable about how "the bumblebee, being unable to fly due to it's odd geometric design and shape, doesn't know anything about geometrics, so it goes on and flies anyway". So too, should any biological offspring of Thomas Lippert. Aim and fly high, and let nothing hold you down, or hold you back.

  16. If biology didn't matter then women should prefer to adopt rather than go through pregnancy, I mean why go through all that suffering when you can get a ready-made baby, but they don't - they want to push their own baby down their own birth canal, so tell us again how biology doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So all these women that gave birth didnt give birth to their own babies...I thought I was the sperm that was replaced not the eggs as well oh hang on it wasnt so they did give birth to their own child it just wasnt with the intended fathers input ..

  18. The point is that biology matters just as much to the father as it does to the mother.

  23. I think it is important for anybody who thinks it possible that he or she is a biological child of Thomas Lippert to be aware of their biological heritage, for medical reasons if nothing else. One never knows what might be passed down genetically. So here is some bare bones information about Thomas Lippert:

Thomas Ray Lippert was born on Nov. 6, 1949, in New Ulm, Minnesota, son of Raymond Thomas Lippert (1915-2001) and the former Myra Louise Witt (1914- ). He was their only child. Raymond was a Roman Catholic, Myra a Lutheran.

There is something I have found rather ironic about all of this:

Thomas Lippert's widow Jean, who has commented on this matter, was Thomas Lippert's third wife! He was married to his first wife from 1969 to 1974, when they divorced, to his second wife from 1975 to 1978, when they divorced, and then in 1979, he married Jean, to whom he then remained married until he died in 1999. What I find rather ironic is that the man had three wives, but had no children with any of them. Instead, he decided to have children in the weird way he did.

I will add here as a side note that Thomas Lippert was 10 years younger than Jean. When he and Jean married in Wisconsin in 1979, Thomas was 30 years old, Jean 40 years old.

    3. We won't ever know. Some won't want to contact the U because they don't trust them. Their testing will only show if the child and father are related. That information would not help someone who chose a donor. Others will not want to tell their children and therefore will not contact anyone. And others will test with one of the three DNA companies to see if they match Annie (or Mrs. Lippert and Annie at 23andme).

  25. A puzzling question has crossed my mind, and I would think at least that it must have crossed the minds of many others as well:

Would anybody have any thoughts as to why Thomas Lippert would have decided in this reprehensible, sneaky, underhanded way to switch other men's sperm for his sperm? If he wanted to be a sperm donor, why then did he not simply approach a fertility clinic and volunteer to be a very legitimate, on the up-and-up sperm donor, as countless men have done and continue to do at fertility clinics everywhere?

    4. In addition, the U was very careful about the mental, physical, and intellectual capabilities of their sperm donors. Choosing a sperm donor was a time consuming and laborious process as my husband and I tried to match as many characteristics with him as possible due to his zero sperm count issues. To have sperm switched is a kind of non-violent rape which results in a pregnancy. I am so glad that the U is paying for testing so we will know for sure if Lippert used his own sperm with my kids.

So I’m asking how many children do they think was born in the state of Utah from this one donor? Please reply if you know

  27. Is it possible to rule out T. Lippert as a donor by his blood type so that I can stop worrying?

    1. I'm sorry to hear that you have been worrying. Tom was O negative.
Why don't you have your child take a DNA test at one of the three companies that have Annie's DNA to be sure?
My best wishes to you and your family.

  28. I have had both my daughter and son tested. At first, they didn't want to test my son, even though he looks remarkably like Mr. Lippert, because he was out of the 'time frame', but we used frozen sperm with him so that he and my daughter would be biologically related. My daughter's testing came back 99.9% chance of being the correct donors child. My son, 0% chance. The university is in the process of having my former husband tested, even though he had a zero sperm count. I looks like my son, who was born in Dec. of '96 is Lippert's biological child. The Andrology clinic told me that he is the first they have found, besides Annie. Is that true? I would love to talk with someone by phone. I am having a hard time processing this.

  31. Hi my name is Marilyn and I'm a reunion search angel who helps people from separated families find one another; I'm very active in advocating for changing the laws so that people whose parents were gamete donors have equal rights with the rest of society.

I like that this site is drawing attention to the number of children that gamete donors have. I want everyone here to know that this issue is not unique to this particular gentleman. Cryo banks downplay the number of offspring each donor actually has. The reality is that they won't contract with a man unless they believe they can sell at least a hundred of his children over a period of five years to offset the administrative costs of collecting, testing, storing his sperm and marketing him to clients as a potential father. Please read this enlightening post by the co-chair of the American Fertility Association, Stuart Bell, who is also the owner of a sperm bank. He is speaking out against a proposed legal limit of 10 offspring per donor. He says that he'd have to raise the price of sperm 10 times in order to break even and keep his business open and that would be an industry wide 10 x price increase or the sperm banks would go out of business. Well if limiting offspring numbers to ten would cause them to increase the cost of sperm 10 times to break even it means that currently their business model relies on selling 10 times more offspring than the proposed limit of 10. That is to say their business model relies upon each of their donors selling at least 100 children probably within no more than 5 years. You can imagine that a business expects to put out a little money for a little while but needs to see a return on that money fairly quickly to stay in business.

  32. What I'm saying here guys is good show for drawing attention to this issue but in reality anyone who has a child with a sperm donor is in the same damn boat. There is nothing truly special about this guy's case other than this bank got caught doing what all the banks likely do. What incentive do they even have to keep track of whose sperm goes with which profile? You can't return the kid once they are born and they offer no guarantee that the child will exhibit the characteristics listed on the profile sheet. Ya'll are the ones who decided to make a baby with a total stranger taking a third party's word about the person.

Do you realize that donor offspring are not only more likely to inbreed, they are more likely to be inbred? Think about the fact that people who mate with donors don't know if they are related to the donor within three degrees or closer. With all the testing they do of donor semen for genetic disease you think they might offer a dna test to people who want to have children with the donor to make sure he is not their second cousin or whatever but they don't offer that service because it would impact sales. The cryo banks won't do anything that reduces their ability to make money. It amazes me that with all the talk about the kids possibly mating with a sibling or relative nobody stops to think about the fact that their parents did not know one another either and might very well be related.

    1. I think the Lippert cases are special though because his sperm wasn't just mistaken for other donor sperm, but was actually filed as belonging to the males of couples who were undergoing IVF. It's one thing to receive donor sperm from the wrong donor, it's quite another to think that you are receiving your husband's sperm when you are actually receiving another man's. Two totally different leagues.

  33. I wrote an article on the donor sibling registry about the artificial limits set by the ASRM. People think that is a limit of 25 kids per donor but really its a formula of 25 families in a population of 800,000. That could be two or three or more kids in 25 families and a population of 800,000 means nothing to a cryo bank serving a large metropolitan area or shipping world wide. Also considering that the population of the world increases every second the number of allowable offspring will increase every second. The allowable number of offspring if you follow the ASRM formula is more than 200,000 offspring per donor. They even call the limit 'arbitrary'. It's a trick. It's a statement intended to look like a limit to the public and the media while allowing its membership to maximize profits from the sale of as many children per gamete donor as possible. Bottom line is that there is no limit because the banks have no liability for the characteristics of the resulting child. The only thing they are liable for is not passing disease to the woman who receives the egg or sperm. The article that I wrote is here:
    https://www.donorsiblingregistry.com/resource-library/industry-issues
    and it's called
Marilyn Huff: What's the Limit of Offspring per Donor? (pdf)

We have a great method of keeping track of how many children each citizen has - the birth certificate. You have to name people on the birth certificates of their offspring and they will regulate their own reproductive behavior when they are held accountable for the resulting children. Ya'll cannot expect conventional results with regard to how many children people produce when you don't require people to follow the conventional methods of accountability. There is a mentality that these businesses are going to take responsibility for the number of offspring produced and yet society is not set up to handle people to offload accountability for their actions to a third party.

Keep bringing attention to this issue but know that it makes no difference whether Lippart was your kid's father or not. If you had a kid with a sperm donor you are looking at that kid having an excess of 100 siblings in the metro area where you live. The risk of incest is not limited to their siblings but certainly extends to their cousins aunts uncles parents and even grandparents, nieces and nephews. Their children will face an even greater risk of incest with cousins and second cousins. Donor offspring have a very high incidence of being inbred themselves as I mentioned before because what do we expect their parents never met before having a baby together.

I have a massive database with donor offspring FTDNA results if you'd like to throw your kid's cousin lists into the hopper I've got some Utah folks already in the database. I work diligently to help these people someday find their families. I do this for free out of the love in my heart and a desire that they should have justice for their mistreatment under the law and may some day see the law treat them equal to the rest of us. Created equal and therefore have equal rights.

Peace to all of you. Be glad your kids are who they are. They are perfect. Be angry that you don't have all the information they need to have in order to live a healthy fully informed life. Don't make out like their father was defective or wrong or they should have had a different father - he is half of who they are and they are perfect. Help them get the answers they need to know their relatives and just love them for being exactly who they are. They will thank you for accepting them as is and for helping them get what they deserve out of life.

    3. I'm wondering - has there been any feedback from his kids on the visceral reaction to who their father is and are they in contact with their paternal relatives at all. People always say to donor offspring who speak against the practice "would you rather not have been born' and its like fine that they were born, fine that their bio parents are who they are its just the lack of accountability compared to the rest of the bio parents in the world, its not fair. Its strange to think of a company as taking responsibility for how many kids a man has. He's just a man that had a whole lot of kids and did not take responsibility for it. He also had kids with women who had not consented to reproduce with him and for that my heart aches. I've reunited people with their paternal families when their father was actually convicted and sentenced for raping their mothers. They were still the father's of their kids regardless of being jerks and their kids wanted to know their paternal relatives. In one case the daughter got his share of inheritance because his sisters made sure of it. It's tough I just hate to see any of his kids feeling bad about who they are and hope they find comfort in getting to know one another and feel loved and accepted by the families that raised them. This is the kind of case that should stay in the public's face but not to say it was a tragedy his kids were born not at all. It should just highlight the fact that holding individuals personally accountable for each kid they have keeps sibling group sizes generally within the limit of how much child support he can afford and it helps to ensure that people know who their relatives are and they can avoid f**king them unless that's something they are in to (eww).

It should also be a lesson to anyone undergoing AI or IVF to demand dna tests in their presence prior to insemination or implantation and to require some assurance that if their gametes are missappropriated that they will be informed of the identity and whereabouts of any children they might have scattered about. Check out UC Irvine Fertility Scandal. Doctors fled to Mexico after misappropriating hundred's of fertile patients sperm, eggs and embryos for use as 'donor' genes that they could make 100% profit on. Check out the OHSU sperm swap scandal. If any male patients provided sperm to this Utah clinic they should join FTDNA because they may very well have kids out there who are looking for their sperm donating fathers. Why would the clinic pay for sperm if they have all they need given to them by potent patients trying to get their wives pregnant? It's free to the clinic and the patients will never know. The reasoning would be nobody gets hurt and they make a profit without any expense. As long as the guy is the right race and disease free the chances of them getting caught are slim and the chances that they'd get in trouble for it are 0 because they had the patients sign waivers. There is no payout for wrongful birth.

I'd say this group should think about other ways in which patients sperm eggs and embryos might have been mishandled. Please join 23 and me and FTDNA because it could make someones dream come true to know their family missed them too.

  34. As Tom Lippert's first cousin, who knew him well for his lifetime, I do not believe his mental problems were from heredity/genetics - but rather from environment/childhood. He had a strange upbringing, and I truly believe that was the cause for his mental issues. He was also extremely intelligent, and he was never challenged intellectually - he possibly could have done well in a school that could have handled his intelligence - and there were no schools like that at the time he was of school age. There were so many factors that shaped his life - but there was not a genetic factor. He was a selfish, egotistical person who always got his own way, either by someone giving things to him or by his manipulating things so they went his way. Again, I am so sorry for any of these families impacted, and I do believe if we knew the TRUE scope of what he did, we would be horrified at the number of Tom's children that are out there, as he did this legitimately in Minneapolis and on his own terms in Utah for many, many years. Even if a woman requested a certain donor - if Tom would be in charge, he would/could have switched his sperm for the true donor's sperm. That was Tom. I also recommend getting your DNA tested by one of the agencies recommended by CeCe or Pam - that is the only way you will know for sure. He died of cirrhosis of the liver - brought on by possibly contracting hepatitis (dormant for a long time) from his grandfather and/or the alcoholism or both. He did not start heavy drinking until later in life - and I believe he drank to try to drown out what he had done in his past. He would call me while drinking and cry and ramble on and on. There was no way for him to make amends, and he did feel damned. But do keep in mind that these children, who were so wanted by their mother (and her husband), would not be with us now - and that is the blessing from all of this - for God always DOES use bad for good. Keep loving your children as you always have - for they ARE your children - and that is the good that comes from this.

  38. Myself and my husband had been trying to get pregnant for 18 months before I was referred to Native Iyabasira fertility solution. We had no definite diagnosis of what was wrong and had become very frustrated. In November 2015 I was given a thorough reproductive health work up, I found out I had low progesterone, thyroid issues and a stomach issue which was affecting my ability to get pregant. This was a very thorough process involving dietary, hormonal and physical investigations and started the recommended treatments in Feb 16 2016. I was pregnant by april 16. I had a baby boy in march 2017. I was carefully monitored and mother Iyabasira was always available for me. I can recommend native iyabasira more highly so much so we are hoping to start trying for a second baby under her guidance.

  40. My name is Kimberly Nicholas from Sydney,I never believed in love spells or magic until i met this spell caster once when i went to Africa in February this year on a business summit. I meant a man who’s name is (Great Matatan powerful Spell ), he is really powerful and could help cast spells to bring back one’s gone, lost, misbehaving lover and magic money spell or spell for a good job or luck spell .I’m now happy & a living testimony cos the man i had wanted to marry left me 3 weeks before our wedding and my life was upside down cos our relationship has been on for 4 years. I really loved him, but his mother was against us and he had no good paying job. So when i met this spell caster, i told him what happened and explained the situation of things to him. At first i was undecided, skeptical and doubtful, but i just gave it a try. And in 7 days when i returned to Sydney, my boyfriend (now husband) called me by himself and came to me apologizing that everything had been settled with his mom and family and he got a new job interview so we should get married. I didn’t believe it cos the spell caster only asked for my name and my boyfriends name and all i wanted him to do. Well we are happily married now and we are expecting our little kid, and my husband also got the new job and our lives became much better. His email is:(  matatanspell@yahoo.com .  )
